At the age of 14 he moved to Constantinople to work and to further his education. In 1866 he left Constantinople for the island of Chios where he became a monk at the age of 30. Three years after becoming a monk he was ordained a deacon, taking the name Nektarios. In 1885 he graduated from the University of Athens having written many books and bible commentaries while attending
